Deworming

Deworming is an essential part of pet health care. Regular deworming protects our animal companions from various parasitic infections that can lead to serious health problems. By taking dewormers, we can ensure that our animals stay healthy and can live long, happy lives. The frequency of deworming varies depending on the animal species and living conditions, which is why it is important to obtain individual recommendations.

Deworming for dogs

Dogs are curious animals that have to sniff and lick everything. Despite all caution, it can quickly happen that they ingest something unwanted that can feel very comfortable in the gastrointestinal tract. That is why the regular administration of dewormers to a person's best friend is so important. We recommend that you administer the deworming tablets 4 times a year (every three months). However, monthly deworming against tapeworms is recommended for dogs that regularly have unsupervised freewheeling, are led to hunt or eat wild rodents or carrion.

Puppies should be treated for roundworms at 2 weeks of age. This is followed by deworming at 2-week intervals up to 2 weeks after ingestion of the last breast milk.

Deworming for cats

We like to differentiate between two types of cats: indoor and outdoor cats. Since indoor cats can minimize the ingestion of unwanted things such as environmental plants or prey, deworming is usually not as common as free-range cats. However, we still recommend deworming your purring four-legged friend at least once a year.

Free-range cats need to be dewormed more frequently. Since you never know exactly what our darlings get outdoors between their claws and then between their teeth, deworming 4 times a year (every 3 months) is recommended. Kittens should be treated for roundworms at 3 weeks of age. This is followed by deworming at 2-week intervals up to 2 weeks after the last milk intake.

Deworming for rodents

Rabbits usually become infected by ingesting food contaminated with worm eggs (wild plants or purchased vegetables) or during personal hygiene. In addition, infected rabbits contaminate the enclosure through excreted parasite stages, so that reinfection (reinfection) can occur constantly in the event of an infestation. Once infected, a rabbit can therefore constantly become infected, in particular by ingesting appendix faeces. Very healthy rabbits with an intact immune system may not contract an externally visible worm infection, but they are constant excretors and thus endanger the weakened contact animals. Therefore, routine deworming is important. In order to find the most suitable dewormer, a faecal examination should ideally be carried out beforehand to determine the parasite species.

Deworming for reptiles

There is a strange network of relationships between (intestinal) parasite and reptile. Because over millions of years of living together, parasite and reptile have come to terms and form a symbiosis (an interplay from which both benefit). In nature, this coexistence is harmless. If housing conditions are not optimal, food supply or excessive stress, this balance can quickly tip in the parasite's favor. Typical symptoms of parasitosis include indigestion (soft, mushy or runny faeces), deficiencies or emaciation despite an adequate supply of food or growth disorders in young animals. The most common parasites are pintails, roundworms, tapeworms, filariae or coccidia (list not exhaustive). It is therefore important to subject the cold-blooded sweethearts to a coprological examination (faecal examination) at least twice a year. The most important examination takes place before winter rest. This is the only way to administer the right dewormer in the correct dosage. After 2-3 weeks, another fecal examination should be carried out to track the success of the therapy. However, during a deworming period, all floor material should be removed and all furnishings should be thoroughly cleaned. We would be happy to provide you with further advice and coprological investigations.

Deworming for birds

Birds can also be attacked by various internal parasites, which can significantly affect their health. The most common parasites include roundworms and trachea worms. Worm infestations can cause symptoms such as weight loss, loss of appetite, and respiratory problems. For this reason, it is important to deworm birds regularly, especially when they have access to the outside world or come into contact with other birds.
The feces should be checked for worm eggs. If the infection is proven, the vet will prescribe a suitable dewormer. Treatment may differ depending on the type of parasite. It is recommended that birds be examined at least twice a year to ensure that they are free from internal parasites.

Frequently asked questions
